Wizard World Texas 08 Sketches by stalk Wizard World Texas 08 Sketches by stalk
Sketches from Wizard World Texas 2008 that I managed to get snapshots of.

These were supposed to just be quick pencil sketches but I used my red and blue .07 leads to add a bit of punch and give the owners more bang for their buck.

Death: She is always a pleasure to sketch at shows. I forgot her trademark ankh and my wife noticed but the owner had picked her up already. Luckily he came back for another sketch the next day and wanted to know if I could add the ankh to this one. Feeling bad for cheesing such an important character detail I not only fixed this one but inked his other pencil sketch for free.

Black Cat: I always forget how her mask goes and make it up on the spot. The fur trim sometimes throws me off but I hate carrying reference or asking for it unless it's something that the buyer really wants to see. Usually the Campos version goes over pretty well though as was the case here.

Power Girl: This was my first time drawing her and I had no clue what she looked like other than a vague idea. Luckily someone had a drawing of her on their table banner that helped me out of that bind.

That's a great PG...for your first time drawing her, you did really well. I like the look on her face and the pose. The others are great too but the PG stands out.

Thanks man! I'm always up to the challenge of drawing a character new to me but it can be a bit of pressure to live up to a fan's vision of what it should look like especially if they turn out not to like your version. Thankfully the guy I drew her for seemed to dig it. :phew:

I haul a damn Previews mag. with me...it has just about everyone current in there but it's heavy...so I tend to just leave them at the conventions so I don't have to fly home with them.....the Campos way of the Black Cat is just fine with anyone...cool job...but Death is perfect here....great mood..

Y'know that Previews idea is great! Beats running around the show trying to find ref plus Diamond is usually at the shows to some capacity and you can just score a catalog there with them.

I remember doing the small con circuit back in the early 90's and knowing exactly how each and every character looked. Now with my age and growing lack of interest in comics it's hard to keep up. I mean last time I looked Wolverine has like fifty different costumes, what's up with that?

Thanks for the kind words-no Texas this year but hopefully we can meet up somewhere else and hang out.

Seriously, you need to draw more Powergirl. It's a crime that you've only just started. Less time drawing Rogue, more time on the buxom blondes.

Y'know aside from a few gals my love for the ladies of duotone lies at Marvel. It's not that DC doesn't have great female characters but I'm a Marvel Zombie of old.

Still, it's me and when have you ever known me to NOT draw hot comic women regardless of where they're from?

Point. You should sit down and make a list of who you have drawn one day. Might make an interesting retrospective.

Nice work, man! The sketchiness doesn't hurt the elegance of your figures at all. :) Excellent work! Very well done!

Thanks Lew! Yeah given that I try to finish these as quick as possible that's about as refined as they get but I'm glad you liked 'em.

You're welcome, man! Well, I wouldn't say working fast really compromises the quality of the work any. Just gives it a different feel. :)

Well now that WWTX is gone I don't have to learn to draw the one thing we all know would be the next big thing.. you know that thing.. oh what a thing it would have been too.. BTW I find only peeps with no skills in their art need a PR guy. so I'm looking for one myself..

Hey man, thanks!

By the way, have you had a chance to put up that Kat piece I did for ya? If not would you mind if I threw it up in my gallery? I have a scanned copy for my 'folio so I could just load it up.

These were done on 11"x14" Bristol and I was letting 'em go at $20.00 (USD) because they're not very involved and quick to do. Though I know I was out of practice because the Black Cat took me a bit longer than expected plus I was also making change and selling other stuff on the side whenever my wife wasn't there adding to the time it took me to get them done.

I'd love to get up to the Great White North and visit. I guess only time will tell.

Thanks Cait.

While I like what original character designer Dringenberg did, it wasn't until Bachalo's version that she started having a visual appeal for me. So essentially whenever I draw her I try to recapture the inspiration I felt seeing his playful, pixie-ish take on her.

Thanks. I'm a big fan of the "sketchy" look myself which is why I like to buy sketchbooks from fellow artists.
